Tidings of Great Joy, by Krista Dunk
And, lo, the angel of the
Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them:
and they were greatly afraid. And the angel said the them, Fear not:
for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to
all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a
Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. - Luke 2:9-11
What will I do this holiday season with all my spare time? Maybe I'll
read that book sitting on my nightstand, or take a nap every afternoon
this week. Plenty of time to organize the fallen leaves in the yard into
nice, neat piles. OK, it's obvious that I'm totally kidding so far. This time of
the year is always crazy-busy, especially for us ladies! We're normally
the holiday bakers, the party planners, hostesses, gift buyers, card
senders, house cleaners, the family liaisons, and the Christmas
decorators. All of this action and responsibility can leave us tired,
scattered, frazzled, and sometimes feeling like this season has become
burdensome, rather than the joyous blessing it's meant to be. Even gifts
piled under the tree start to look like a mess that needs to be
organized.
In fact, it seems like the world has commercialized Christmas to just be
all about gifts: Getting gifts, sending gifts, finding the perfect gift
that will impress, making a gift wish list, saving money on gifts, etc.
Honestly, gifts are fun and I like giving and receiving them! If you
think about it, you can tell a lot about a gift-giver from their gift.
Are they practical? Wealthy? Enjoy enduring, quality items? Are they in
love with the recipient? Do they have a knack for getting just the right
thing? My conclusion is that maybe Christmas IS all about gifts... All
about one special gift... The perfect gift.
Imagine all that God has given to us. Not only this gorgeous planet with
amazing seasonal beauty and our personal gifts and talents which He
carefully selected for each of us before our birth, but the gift of His
son Jesus. That is actually the most significant gift ever given - given
to all people, for all time. This Christmas season is to be a
celebration of Jesus' birth. It's a birthday party! So what does the
gift of Jesus say about God, the gift-giver? The gift of Jesus shows
God's great compassion for a world that He created, although often
rejects and forgets Him. It shows the depth of His love for all people.
It is practical, valuable, enduring, unique, and thoughtful.
During this busy Christmas time, let us remember that Christmas is not
about yard light contests, party hopping, or credit card spending fests.
If we are to model ourselves and our gift-giving by God's example, let's
go out and share some love and spread some joy this season. It's what we
each have been made for, and nothing else can truly fulfill our souls.
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to All,
Krista & Tammy
