Recently, I had a conversation with an individual who was assessing their own personal expectations for their life. They were digging deep, uncovering self-imposed expectations that may be working either for or against them. They were looking closely at their own personal choices around what they do for others and what they want out of life. I noticed they were being tough on themselves as they dove into the 'what more can I do' part of their dialogue. It was an interesting process to witness, as it reminded me of how hard I can be on myself. I often place awfully high expectations on what I can do or accomplish, yet end up feeling cheated in the long run because of over-promising to others and leaving self out on a limb. Not the best way to take care of myself! Well as God does, he placed a new perspective about this in front of me this weekend. I heard someone share about making the most out of opportunities and to start with the inquiry of, "What does God expect of me?" Yes, not a coincidence that this came on the heels of the robust conversations I was having with myself and with others. What I noticed is that I am really good about sowing into the lives of others and yet I shorten the seeds I sow for myself. Although my willingness to give abundantly to the most current cause is good, it doesn't mean I am always aligned with God's expectations, or what He wants of me, my time, money, or talents. He simply expects me to understand His will for my life. Right.... Wow that sounds so easy. So why then, do I find myself (as do others that I know) in precarious situations that remove us from the will of our father? Bottom-line - When we are not clear enough on our appointed purpose. When we are working to continually push that boulder up the proverbial hill, we are pushing into something that may not be from God. The situation is man-made not kingdom raised. I have learned that distractions will catch me when I am not closely aligned with God's will. The roadblocks seem bigger and stronger when I am walking against the tide. I know the feelings of being cheated out of time and energy are coming from over-committing myself in the world. In the future, my intention is to be disciplined and serve in a way that is pleasing unto the Lord. Therefore, the expectation I should have for myself should simply be to please my father. When I am aligned with that purpose, I believe I am meeting what God expects of me.
