Poor Tammy, she really dislikes it when I (or anyone) talk about bats. Definitely not her favorite creature out of all of God's creation! Growing up, we had bats outside at dusk every night in the summer time. I remember thinking they were strange and mysterious, and yelling, "Cover your hair!", if any flew close to my sister and I! I digress... Anyway, for this discussion, I don't like the bats either. The kind we're talking about today are "spiritual fruit bats", bats that steal our spiritual fruit. If you are wondering what spiritual fruit means (or need a reminder), this verse will explain more: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." -Galatians 5:22-25 What an amazing world this would be if we all produced the fruit of the Spirit listed in this verse. Think about that for a moment. God's Spirit leading and directing people, creating these wonderful characteristics - wow. Unfortunately, any number of nasty fruit bats can attempt to steal the fruit of the Spirit from us on a daily basis, if we let them. Here are a few examples of fruit bats that we might have hanging around, clinging to the dark recesses of our hearts and minds:
We all know it's a daily fight against these fruit-stealing bats. But guess what - It's an accomplishment in itself that we are putting up a fight! Many people who live without the knowledge of God's ways accept the bats without a second thought. In Ephesians 6, the Bible tells us how to ward off the enemy's fruit bats with the belt of truth, shield of faith, breastplate of righteousness, sword of the Spirit, and the helmet of salvation. Maybe instead of yelling, "Cover your hair!", we should pray, "Cover our hearts!" instead. Let's guard our hearts with all diligence against these, and other, potentially devastating spiritual fruit bats!
