Whether you are starting a business, expanding or adjusting your current business, planning is critical to its existence. A business plan is not developed just to secure financing or venture capital. It's a step-by-step guide that assists a business owner in making intentional choices in furthering the sustainability of the company. Why write a business plan? Because cash flow, profit and long-term viability do not happen consistently without proper planning. You are like many business owners who are walking around with so many ideas in your head and feeling pulled in so many different directions. You recognize that feeling. The feeling that everything has to be done at the same time, since everything has turned into a crisis. Writing brings clarity to your thinking. In writing your business plan, you get inspiration and direction to enable you to stay on course. Your business plan will help you know when you are presented with an opportunity or a distraction. It helps you determine and coordinate all aspects of your business operations. It will reinforce your vision, give you a reference point for checking your business' progress and will most likely bring up factors you did not consider when creating the plan in your head. So how do you go from inspiration, through implementation to results? Make the decision to run the business of your dreams. Schedule time to write your plan. Planning requires that we stop and be still to receive guidance to move forward. A complete business plan has a vision, mission, goals, strategies, and tasks. All of these combined will set a course for future actions and for the financial development of your company. Audrey Godwin, Founder of The Godwin Group, PLLC, Renton, WA.
