OK, maybe you don't want to answer that question. Or at least be cautious with whom you share it, right? So what constitutes good gossip? That inner office stuff that happens over cubicle walls or around the water cooler? Is it the sharing of opinions even if they may tear down and tear apart the church? What's justified and what's not when it comes to purging your wandering thoughts on others? The Word makes it pretty clear. The Amplified refers to those who gossip as people "off clucking their tongues" and as 'small-minded,' 'wicked' and 'malicious'. WOW - those words are packed full of some serious attitude! When we look at the people who are labeled in the Bible as gossipers, they have similar characteristics. I believe when you explore these characteristics, you will not only look more seriously at your own network, you will reflect the mirror on yourself a bit too (I know I did). When it comes right down to it, gossip is not God's best and certainly is not full of His generosity. Oh but sometimes purging thoughts and emotions on that girlfriend, about someone else, feels invigorating, feels justified, right? Those are just the emotions that we want to self-check against God's word real quick and in a hurry. When we are speaking (or pointing fingers) about another person's actions, their beliefs, etc., as the old saying goes, we always have three fingers pointing back at us. By engaging in gossip, we are forming communities that plan misery for others and that can't be good. Even standing and listening to other peoples' words of discord without saying anything is participating in gossip. We need to do as it is written in Psalm 31:19 (amp), which says, "As you slam the door on those oily, mocking faces, you silence the poisonous gossip." So the next time you feel like clucking your tongue, sharing a malicious thought or sowing discord in the work place, your home or church family, stop and remember Psalm 112:1 - "Hallelujah! Blessed man, blessed woman, who fear God, who cherish and relish his commandments, their children robust on the earth, and the homes of the upright - how blessed! Their houses brim with wealth and a generosity that never runs dry. Sunrise breaks through the darkness for good people - God's grace and mercy and justice! The good person is generous and lends lavishly; No shuffling or stumbling around for this one, but a sterling and solid and lasting reputation. Unfazed by rumor and gossip, heart ready, trusting in God, spirit firm, unperturbed, ever blessed, relaxed among enemies, they lavish gifts on the poor - A generosity that goes on, and on, and on. An honored life! A beautiful life! Someone wicked takes one look and rages, blusters away but ends up speechless. There's nothing to the dreams of the wicked. Nothing." (Amp)
