Blogging. The word evokes different emotions in business owners. Some see blogging as a waste of time - something they neither understand or think can improve their business. Others believe in the power of blogging and it's ability to connect them with their clients. So, what exactly is a blog and how can a business owner best use a blog to promote their business? What Exactly Is A Blog? A “blog” is short for “weblog”, which is the term that was coined for an online journal or “log”. A blog is something entirely of your own creation and you can use it to express your personal thoughts and opinions, or to share business news such as events and special promotions. So, How Do I Get Started? The easiest way is to use one of the free tools available online, such as Google’s Blogger. You can create your blog - free of charge - using their online tools and templates. After you have created the blog, you can customize it to fit your needs, start creating posts and “Voi-La” – your blog is posted online for the world to see. For business use, however, it's important to consider having your blog directly on your business website. This way, when your website visitors read your blog they stay on your website. Or, if they find your blog through a search engine, they have instant access to the rest of your website. This may take some work and may involve a small investment to have a web designer sit up, but in the long run the benefits will outweigh the cost. How Will People Find My Blog? There are many ways to get your blog noticed. For instance, there are entire websites devoted to listing blogs dedicated to any topic that you can think of. One of the best such websites devoted to women-created blogs, is BlogHer.com. You can also use free tools such a FeedBurner.com to track the traffic on your blog and to create a dynamic title box that can be used to display your blog headlines on the main page of your website or even in your email signature. Each time you update your blog, these headlines are instantly updated. If you are blogging in the hopes of attracting customers, make sure to use wise use of words and links in your blogs. Make a list of keywords that your target market may be using when performing web searches. When possible, use a few of these keywords in the text of your blogs. It's important to note that you don't want to over-saturate your blog posts with keywords, but instead use them here-and-there throughout your blog. To Sum It All Up - There are many ways to use a blog for business and marketing purposes. If used correctly, a blog can be a terrific tool to inform potential customers of your business. Be sure to update your blog on a regular basis so that the content remains fresh. By following these simple techniques you'll be well on your way to blogging success.
